Provides care for people who have a critical illness or injury.
Provides life support to criticallly ill adult patients with serious life threatening conditions from a variety of causes which may include:
- heart attack
- kidney, liver or heart failure
- major surgery
- severe trauma
- serious infections (bacterial or viral)
Specialized equipment is used to monitor patients and provie life support. This may include:
- helping the patient breathe (ventilator)
- continuous monitoring of the heart, lungs, and other vital organs
- cleaning a person's blood with dialysis
