The Maternal Fetal Medicine Antenatal Service consists of a neonatologist who provides pre-delivery counselling mothers and their families when their baby is expected to have health issues at birth. The consultant provides the family with information about what to expect at the time of delivery and can answer any questions they have around their baby’s anticipated needs.
A Neonatologist on the Maternal Fetal Medicine Anetnatal Service based at FMC NICU provides pre-delivery consultations (from Monday to Friday) to mothers with significant conditions affecting the fetus within the Southern Alberta catchment area. Issues affecting the fetus that may be addressed are prematurity, surgical issues, genetic conditions, cardiac problems as well as maternal illness that may affect the Fetus. The Neonatologist may also work with others in Obstetrics, Genetics or other specialties to provide a family conference in complex cases. Relevant information is then provided to the obststrics team and the NICU to ensure there is seamless care throughout the process.
