The focus of this first meeting is a solution focused counselling session and screening for the presence of substance use and mental health issues that may require more intensive or longer term interventions. Currently, young people and their families are provided the choice of engaging in service options that may meet their goal area(s) that are offered on the drop-in or registered program monthly schedules. These are primarily recovery, maintenance and health management options or low intensity community based services that are specifically designed to be engaging and developmentally relevant. Young people and their families can also be connected to AMH young adult services providers for individual addiction counselling, short-term counselling, housing/financial supports and employment/education supports. Support groups like Connecting by Choice to learn skills and share knowledge with others. When indicated, there is also the ability for a referral to psychiatry. Individuals who require more intensive or longer term interventions are transitioned to adult services.
