We use the arts and social enterprise to enhance wellness in the University of Alberta Hospital community, inspiring wholeness and creating connections.
We are administered by a board of directors, hospital and community representatives, an executive director, business manager, arts in healthcare manager, professional artists and administrative staff. The Friends also have a valuable team of volunteers who we could not function without.
Some of our social endeavors are as follows:
Friends' Gift Shop
The Friends' Gift Shop is a “hospital boutique” located on the main floor of the hospital and features an array of items from comfort food and cold drinks to flowers and home décor. Orders for flowers, small gift baskets or stuffed toys are available by calling the gift shop. The shop caters to a wide range of patients, hospital staff and visitors alike.
Vendors in the UAH Atrium
A select group of long term vendors sell items in the atrium year round. A portion of sales support the Friends of University Hospitals. Call to find out more information about the vendors and health education table bookings.
Support of Volunteer Resources
Friends provide annual funding to Volunteer Resources for direct program costs including meals and transport. There are over 70 programs that rely on the support of 550 volunteers. Please call for a volunteer application package.
Nancy Lieberman Memorial Fund
Named in honor of long time volunteer Nancy Lieberman this fund supports projects and the purchases of equipment and supplies that provide patient care and comfort.
Arts in Healthcare
- Artists on the Ward
A team of professional and volunteer artists visit the bedside of adult patients. Please call to book an artist on the ward for an adult patient by calling 780-407-8428
- McMullen Gallery
Located on the main floor beside the east entrance near 112 St, the gallery offers the opportunity for visitors to escape and relax while surrounded by beautiful and engaging art exhibits.
- Art throughout the hospital
The Friends manage a permanent art collection of 1400 pieces and provides advice and management of new commissions, acquisitions and special arts projects.
Donations
If a volunteer or an artist on the ward has helped you or a family member and you want to give back you can.
- VISA, MasterCard or debit card donations are accepted at the Friends’ Gift Shop
- Cheque or money order can be made payable to “The Friends of University Hospitals” and dropped off or mailed to us.
- Online donations can be made by searching The Friends of University Hospitals on ATB Cares
