Provides privacy advice, responsible for PIAs, processes access to information requests under FOIP, and investigates privacy concerns, incidents, and breaches involving Alberta Health Services (AHS) facilities and employees.
AHS is subject to Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) and Health Information Act (HIA) legislation and must protect your personal and health information and when applicable may investigate privacy incidents involving your personal information or your health information.
Personal Information includes, but is not limited to, employee demographics, benefits, payroll, employment and education history and unique identifiers (e.g. SIN, driver’s license, employee ID).
Health Information includes, but is not limited to, patient name, DOB, PHN, ULI, healthcare provider, diagnostic and treatment information.
AHS’s Privacy Office is responsible for processing information requests under FOIP, answering general privacy related questions under FOIP and HIA, and when applicable, investigating suspected and confirmed privacy breaches involving AHS’s facilities and employees as it relates to your personal information or health information.
The following queries are not handled by the AHS Privacy Office:
- requests from former/current employees for personal information - call HR Contact Centre
- requests for health information regarding an AHS program or service - contact the service area directly or call the health information management department at the facility.
- requests for name/address change, update first with Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. You are encouraged to validate your information when you seek a health care service to ensure that all systems are up to date.
