Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a procedure during which brief electrical stimulation to the brain produces a reaction that is like a seizure. ECT is used to treat severe depression or other psychiatric and neurological conditions, such as schizophrenia.
This program provides a specialized treatment for adult and geriatric populations living with depression and / or mood disorders :
- where medication is not working or
- where they are too acute to wait for medication to have effect
- with the goal of improving mood and personal function
This is accomplished by inducing a seizure with physical stimulation to both inpatient and outpatient clients. Typically a series of 12 treatments over 4 weeks would be recommended. Maintenance therapy is also available after a series.
