Provides life support to critically ill adult patients with serious, life-threatening illnesses from a variety of causes, which may include:
- shock
- pneumonia
- trauma
- transplantation
- severe surgical illness
- other serious medical illnesses caused by kidney, liver failure, and diabetes
Equipment is used to monitor patients and provide life support, including:
- helping the patient to breathe
- supporting vitals signs with medicine
- cleaning a person's blood with different types of dialysis
