Offers programming to prepare Aboriginal children with school-readiness skills to enter mainstream schools on an equal basis with all other children.
Service provides:
- culturally relevant traditional teachings for Aboriginal children to prepare them with school-readiness skills to enter mainstream schools on an equal basis with all other children
Includes:
- learning through play
- supporting parents / caregivers as the primary teachers of their children
- engaging parents / caregivers in program participation
- recognizing and supporting extended families in teaching and caring for children
- seeking community Elders' participation and support
- involving community partners and / or cohorts
- helping to build the child’s self-esteem and preserve cultural identity, and foster a desire of lifelong learning
- ensuring transparent evaluation and accountability frameworks
Programming topics include:
- culture and language
- education and school readiness
- health and safety promotion
- nutrition (using the Canadian Aboriginal Food Guide)
- social support networking
- parental involvement
