Office of the Alberta Health Advocates
Provides education about the Alberta Health Charter and patients' rights as set out in the Mental Health Act, and connects people with health and mental health services, programs, and resources.
Service provides:
- assistance to individuals with navigating the health system
- promotion and protection of the rights of persons in accordance with the Mental Health Act and Patient Advocate Regulation
Includes:
- informing individuals about what they can expect from the health system and their responsibilities
- individual advocacy
- investigating situations where patients have experienced a situation not consistent with the Health Charter
- redirecting complaints to existing resolutions mechanisms where appropriate
- support and rights-related information for psychiatric patients who are certified and detained in designated mental health facilities or subject to a Community Treatment Order (CTO)
- information about patient rights, detention, treatment, and care
- presentations and training about patient rights to professionals, community organizations, and other interested parties
