Provides warranty protection for new homes and administers builder license requirements in Alberta under the New Home Buyer Protection Act.
Service provides:
- administering the required licensing system for builders in Alberta
- a registry of licensed residential builders
- protection under warranty for new homes built under the New Home Buyer Protection Act, including single detached family homes, duplexes, multi-family homes, condominiums, manufactured homes, and recreational properties
Warranty includes, at a minimum:
- 1 year for finishes in the home, including defects in flooring, paint, or trim
- 2 years for defects in labour and materials related to heating, plumbing, and electrical systems
- 5 years building envelope protection, the exterior shell of the building which includes the roof and walls, with 2 additional years of coverage available
- 10 years coverage for major structural components, including frame and foundation
Effective date: the Act applies only to new homes constructed under a building permit applied for after February 1, 2014.
