Provides legal advice and assistance to individuals who are unrepresented at their first court appearance.
Service provides:
- limited basic assistance to people who are unrepresented at their first court appearance
- recommendations for clients who require full representation by a lawyer for the remainder of their case
Duty counsel is assigned to the following docket courts in Alberta:
- criminal court (adult and youth)
- drug treatment court (Calgary and Edmonton)
- disciplinary hearings at correctional facilities
- applications for confirmations and breaches of emergency protection orders
- Mental Health Review panel hearings
- Alberta Court of Justice - family and child welfare dockets (Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, St. Paul, and Wetaskiwin)
- Court of King's Bench - family (Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, St. Paul, and Wetaskiwin)
