Pet therapy is a referral based program in which trained therapy dogs are integrated into a pediatric patient's psychosocial treatment process. It is a goal directed intervention delivered by a health care professional.
Pet Therapy is utilized to:
- increase participation in therapies such as physical, occupational, speech or psychological treatments
- help in coping or compliance with tests or procedures
- help improve mood, decrease anxiety and/or fear of hospitalizatoin or illness
